The Maasai Mara, Live from Kenya
Teaching Environmental Change & Management in real time.
What if your Geography class could ask a Maasai guide where the wildebeest have moved this week, how this year’s rains have affected grazing, or whether tourism really benefits local communities — and receive the answers live from the Maasai Mara?
That is the premise behind Vyatra’s Geography learning journey for Environmental Change & Management. During a normal classroom period, Australian students connect live with a knowledgeable Maasai guide in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, exploring one of the world’s most celebrated ecosystems as it exists that day — and investigating the geographical challenge of balancing conservation, tourism, climate change and traditional pastoral livelihoods.
The journey begins by introducing the Maasai Mara ecosystem and the annual migration of over a million wildebeest between the Serengeti and the Mara.
Students then cross live into a community conservancy, where they experience the landscape through the eyes of the people who live and work there every day — no enclosures, no feeding times, no staged encounters.
From there, the focus shifts to Geography: a warming climate and unpredictable rainfall, expanding agriculture and fencing that fragment migration routes, and the challenge of protecting biodiversity while sustaining Maasai livelihoods. Through an authentic financial case study, students compare joining a community conservancy against running cattle on privately owned land — discovering that environmental management means balancing ecological, economic and social priorities, not finding simple right-or-wrong answers.
To introduce teachers to this learning journey, Vyatra will host a free 30-minute live sampler session from the Maasai Mara on Tuesday 1 September, 4.30–5pm AEST. Bring a colleague, your Head of Humanities, or anyone else who enjoys discovering new ways to bring the world into the classroom.
